Saturday Video: Shostak on "What if ET is out there?"

by Salman Hameed

Seth Shostak is a fantastic speaker. Here he is makes the claim that we will detect at ET signal within the next two dozen years. Don't know - but I hope he is right. Even if we don't find the signal, here he makes the case for why SETI is still important.

Enjoy!

  1. I think if there is any intelligent ET out there, they can either be at least from a few million years primitive than us to a few million years advanced than us. If so, they could already have built a technology for intergalactic travel ages ago, like WE are likely to do in a few millenia in future. Yet we haven't been contacted (unless we believe in the UFO stories). It is like time-travel paradox where no one has ever come back to us from future, so it is logical to assume that time travel is not possible. So I m also fairly confident that life, let alone intelligent one, is not a commonplace scenario. One just can't derive from the numbers of exoplanets to deduce that there definitely got to be intelligent life out there. Some logic has to be included too. Just my thought.

  2. "Some logic has to be included too."
    Reminds me of Fermi Paradox.

Anon, does the following verse not mean there will be living creatures in more than one planet?

    The Qur'an. 042.029
YUSUFALI: And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has scattered through them: and He has power to gather them together when He wills.

  3. Ali,
Quoting the holy scriptures is really stupid for proving a point as there are many interpretations that vary with the interpreter. In this case people use "the heaven" mentioned in the quran sometimes as the 7 layers of the atmosphere and sometimes as the proof for multiple earths.

  4. Salman,

"Quoting the holy scriptures is really stupid for proving a point as there are many interpretations that vary with the interpreter."
The interpretations vary because sometimes even half-baked potatoes think they can interpret the Quran.
If you look at the interpretations of qualified interpretors, there is no controversy in what I quoted.
The Earth is NOT the only place with life.

  5. Ali, I was talking about the "Qualified" interpreters who confuse (abuse) the word of seven skies. Anyways being a religious/holy scripture from an omniscient almighty, should be written in a clear and succinct manner so as to leave no room for spurious interpretations.
